Grand
Canyon South Rim |
Whether
its your first visit or your tenth, the Grand
Canyon will never cease to amaze. It's
definitely a "Must See" for
everyone. Make sure to allow enough time to
visit the various lookout points. A walking
trail meanders along the rim, but just be
careful not to get too close to the edge.
Several lookout points have trails down into
the canyon that you can walk or you can sign
up for a tour by mule. If you decide to walk,
make sure you take along enough water and
remember - the return trip is uphill so don't
push it too much. |
 |
|
| Accommodations |
| There
are lodging properties within the
national park on the South Rim,
however reservations can be difficult to get
especially during the higher travel months. A
good alternative is Grand
Canyon South Rim / Tusayan,
just a few minutes from the South Entrance of the
National Park where
you'll find six moderately priced hotels, restaurants and shopping. Entrance
fee to the park is $25 (subject to change) per non-commercial
vehicle and is good for 7 days so you'll be
able to re-enter the park easily. |
If
you can't find a room inside the park or in
Tusayan, try Williams
(57 miles to the south) or Flagstaff
(79 miles to the southeast). Both are close
enough to allow you to return to the park. |

Monument Valley |
|
If you've got some
time, a visit to Monument Valley is well worth
the drive. From the Grand Canyon, take Hwy 64
east to Hwy 89 north. Then take Hwy 160
northeast
to Kayenta. If you need a place to stay along
the way, there's a great Hampton Inn located in
Kayenta that is new and very clean. From
Kayenta, take Hwy 163 north. The entrance to Monument Valley
will be on the right. Since the valley is
located within the Navajo Reservation, it is a
tribal park operated by the Navajo Nation. A
nominal entrance fee will get you into the park
where there are great views of the entire valley
from the visitor center. |
 |
|
Tours are operated down
into the valley if you want to experience the
mystique up close. No matter how you view it,
Monument Valley will leave you breathless. Make
sure you don't forget to take your camera, as it
will be a photo opportunity of a life time. |
